Opera released a State of the Mobile Web: First Quarter, 2008 report recently. The report listed the top 10 Chinese mobile sites based on the statistics of Opera Mini.
Web portal content and search engine access is extremely popular in China, accounting for nearly 55% of the traffic.
E-commerce and e-mail are not yet as popular in China as in other parts of the world. Together, these two categories combine to create less than 2% of overall Opera Mini traffic in China.
Top 10 sites in China
1. www.sina.com.cn
2. www.baidu.com
3. www.google.cn
4. www.ko.cn
5. news.sohu.com
6. www.xiaonei.com
7. www.3g.cn
8. www.paojiao.com
9. www.188bet.com
10. www.feiku.com
- It’s interesting to see Sina is still the most popular one on mobile, together with Sohu ranked at 5 and 3G.cn, a mobile portal ranked at 7, portal content is extreme popular on mobile phone.
- Two social networking sites are on the list: Ko.cn is a mobile social networking site operated by Kong.net, which is the partner of Opera Mini in China, Xiaonei.com also has quite big mobile user base.
- Paojiao.com is a website for mobile software information and downloads.
- Feiku.com is mobile a e-book site. But in China, there are many other popular mobile e-book sites which ask users to use their own mobile software clients to download and read e-books, instead of on mobile browser.
- 188bet is not a gambling site, and it is not a Chinese site
Since it is only based on the stats of Opera Mini’s users, and I think the market share of Opera Mini in China is still small, so the rank has its obvious limitation. Perhaps if UCWeb releases similar statistics, we can have better idea about the market.
